FROZEN FRUIT JUICE PAINTING
It’s letter “U” time on the A-Z healthy eating series! “U” is for Utterly Delicious Juices and you will love today’s fun activity with frozen fruit juice painting.
First the boys and I had so much fun making juices of different colours by following the suggested recipes here. Fruit juices are such a great way to pack a lot of nutritional goodness (with very little work!) so I often make them for my boys. The boys really had fun mixing a variety of fruits and vegetables to achieve different colours.
We then froze our coloured fruit juices in ice cube trays so that we could paint with them for a different sensory painting experience! My boys have always liked painting and painting with frozen paint took their fun to a whole new level. It was wonderful to hear their shrieks of delight as they tried to hold onto the cold, slippery ice cubes whilst trying to paint. I didn’t need to remind them to taste the frozen juice because which kid can resist the temptation of ice on their tongues!
Painting with ice really is a fun process art that you will enjoy trying with your little ones. It is important to remember that process art is all about the experience children have while they are creating. If the end product turns out beautiful, that’s great, but the end product should not be the focus of process art. Process art allows children the chance to explore the world around them, ask questions, and see how things work. It fits in with how children learn because it allows them room to be themselves, make their own decisions, and just create! The process of painting with ice offers many learning opportunities for young children such as fine motor skills, sensory exploration, art techniques as well as creativity and self-expression.
We also had a basic science lesson as we discussed how materials can be changed by freezing and heating. They saw how the liquid juice turned into solid ice when placed in a freezer. They also saw how the heat of their hands melted the solid ice back into liquid. It was a great beginner lesson in chemical sciences.
Hope you enjoy playing and painting with this fun sensory process art experience.
